About us
The story of Dulan’s Roadside Kitchen began long before our trucks ever hit the road. It started in 1984, when Adolf and Mary Dulan, affectionately remembered as the heart and soul behind a new era of Los Angeles dining, opened their beloved Aunt Kizzy’s Back Porch Soul Food Restaurant. Adolf, lovingly known throughout the community as the “King of Soul Food,” and Mary set out to serve delicious, home-style meals made with love, pride, and genuine Southern hospitality.
Our History: The Foundation of Service
Our story is one built on community and hospitality, rooted in the hard work of Adolf and Mary Dulan. In 1975, they launched the family's first independent venture, Hamburger City, where a young Greg Dulan began working for his parents, gaining a lifetime of industry experience. This foundation led Adolf and Mary to open the iconic Aunt Kizzy's Back Porch in Marina Del Rey in 1984, where Greg learned the art of soul food. The demand for the Dulan family's cooking was so great that Greg soon launched Aunt Kizzy's Catering Service, serving events across Los Angeles.
In 1992, Greg and his wife Brenda opened Dulan's on Crenshaw. Over the decades, Dulan’s became a vital Los Angeles institution, serving the local community we hold so dear. Our commitment goes far beyond the plate; through decades of community giving, mentorship (which Greg credits to his time at Howard University), and providing employment opportunities, Dulan's has always strived to give back to the people who support us. This deep-rooted dedication to service and quality, showcased by our self-financed $2 million renovation of Dulan's on Crenshaw, is the driving force behind the Roadside Kitchen.
The Innovation: Soul Food Delivered, Effortlessly
We recognized that high-quality, authentic soul food does not exist on a consistent basis in many areas outside of Los Angeles. Our vision for Dulan's Roadside Kitchen is to meet this demand and erase those geographical boundaries using state-of-the-art mobile fulfillment vehicles. This revolutionary concept is possible because we know no food travels and holds better than soul food!
The efficiency of our pre-plated meal format makes our operation less labor-intensive and incredibly flexible. We prepare these meals fresh every day, ensuring they are exactly what we cook in the restaurant. We are committed to delivering the same large, delicious portions our customers love through two highly convenient methods:
Grocery Stores: Our signature meals, packed with love, are available as heat-and-serve options, ensuring fresh soul food is just an aisle away. Mobile Delivery: Our mobile food trucks act as rolling kitchens. Meals are either sold in the easy heat-and-serve format or pre-plated HOT and driven straight to designated communities.
This innovation brings consistent, high-quality soul food directly to areas outside of Los Angeles that previously had limited options. Our unique model offers an invaluable convenience, especially for those looking for ways to feed Mom and Dad the comforting, authentic food you know they will genuinely eat and enjoy.
